Bio
I am an emerging artist from South West London, having graduated from Bath Spa University in BA(Hons) Fine Art. Since graduating in 2022, I have exhibited at the Mall Galleries in London, Hypha Studios in Stratford and have won a TATE competition which resulted in my work being shown on a billboard in London. Upcoming, I have a solo exhibition of my photographs in Marfa Texas where I have been asked to photograph along the Mexican-Texas border and create sight-specific photography to accompany my other work from around the world.
The works are from a culmination of various long trips to parts of the world including Morocco, Scotland Oman, Yemen and America. I am concerned with the material that illuminates what would otherwise be lost in a normal image. I multi expose the images to show an atmosphere, a material unexplainable with other methods. I want to be seen as an artist who uses photography as one sense of his medium. I want to be a sculptor and a jeweller. Photography is me dealing with the real world. Full of imbalance. I impart myself into small worlds around our globe, constantly filling my perspective as I work with people from the Swat valley in Pakistan or drink tea with Indian sailors or catch fish with African fisherman. The travels through soul refers both to my own soul and the attempt at recording other peoples and entire countries. I had a very multicultural upbringing being brought up in Mozambique and Oman and London. I feel the travel is due to this and wanting to connect with parts from this upbringing, tracing my steps around the globe. I see a blur between reality and the distinguished conscious. Dealing with large themes as I take myself around the world. Fighting against societal norms, perhaps fighting the good fight, looking at how people live around the world. It does sometimes feel like visiting different planets as your plane touches down. Leaving little behind except for that taken in images, smiles and memories. The images allude to the material that makes up the conscious as well as physical materials a roughness or shine. Colour alludes to an undercurrent of feeling used in methods and ways not seen in reality. Sometimes I find myself distanced by the travel. The rush of touching down somewhere far away and relearning life is perspective being topped up. I find myself running around with a camera unable to stop myself taking photos making connections in a fast and furious way. The photos are more about life coming on fast and furious. Just holding onto the shutter in the madness.
